Pysanky are Ukrainian Easter eggs embellished using a wax-resist method. The geometric designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax, then the egg is dyed several times starting with the lightest color to create multiple colors. Although these designs are Easter European in origin, they resinate with folk-art motifs in the Southwest. Mexican and Navajo weaving and Mata Ortiz pottery, for example, employ similar intricate geometrics designs to those found on Ukrainian Easter eggs. We believe that these Ukrainian design patterns will blend seamlessly into the Southwestern aesthetic.
